Hello there, welcome to the new gdgt! A lot’s changed since the last time you were here.
First things first: the new gdgt is all about making it fun and frictionless to find your next device. What does that mean? Reviews, recommendations, and new ways to make discovering and buying gadgets better.
Hard to believe, but it’s 2012 and finding your next gadget still sucks. It’s kind of funny when you think about it — even though these products are capable of making our lives easier and saving us all kinds of time, figuring out which one to buy is often really difficult and extremely time-consuming. That’s where the new gdgt comes in.
The first thing you’ll probably notice is that gdgt is all about reviews — but with a twist. We call it the gdgt score (that’s pronounced like “gadget score”!). Here it is:
The gdgt score is something brand new: a unique ranking of products based on a combination of review data from both critics and users, and extensive independent analysis (including testing in our labs) by our highly experienced team of researchers and editors (led by our own Marc Perton, who recently joined us from Consumer Reports to help lead the new gdgt).
After collecting all this raw data, we debate, sometimes endlessly, about how that all translates into a product’s final score. (And to make things even easier, we also write a conclusion for each scored product.) It’s a lot of work, but a simple goal: providing you with a painless, easy to understand, standardized metric that will save you a lot of hassle.¹
But the gdgt score isn’t enough. There are a lot of amazing products out there that carry outstanding scores — but that aren’t what you’re probably looking to buy. Yes, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is an outstanding camera, easily one of the best in the world, per our gdgt score. But chances are you’re looking for something that won’t permanently impact your kid’s college fund.
That’s why we’ve also taken the next step and put our research and reviewing to work, hand-selecting the absolute best of the best products and giving them the extremely rare status of gdgt recommended:
Of the tens of thousands of products in our database, gdgt recommended products represent less than a half of one percent. They’re simply the best of what’s available today — higher quality, easier to use, and often times actually even less expensive than many alternatives. These gadgets are out there, and we’ll save you the trouble of having to look for them. Just visit our recommendations page (coming this week!) or keep an eye out for the gdgt recommended label and buy with confidence.
We heard you loud and clear.
You told us that all the work we’ve been doing at gdgt over the past couple of years has given us many of the building blocks to make something amazing that makes finding and buying gadgets faster, easier, and more fun than what exists today. So we made the new gdgt for you. Not just to save you time, money, and hassle, but to do something we never really thought possible: make finding and buying gadgets every bit as fun and easy as using them.
What’s next? Well, we need your help. Not only spreading the word about #newgdgt, but telling us what you think of our scores, recommendation picks, and especially telling us what you think we should review and recommend next. Go on, don’t be shy, drop your feedback here!
