Day one
by Ryan Block on July 2, 2009

Wow. We hoped people would stop by and check out the site, but we really had no idea the sheer force the internet would bring to gdgt. Of course, we were up and down during the first few hours after we went live yesterday (hey, it wouldn’t be a proper launch without a little downtime, right?), but once we got things stabilized we’ve been absolutely stunned by the number of users registering for the site (tens of thousands) and the number of products you’ve submitted (over 8,000 in the first 24 hours).
Actually, because we’ve gotten so slammed with product submissions, we’ve taken down the add pages feature for a day or two (hopefully not longer!) so we can sort through everything. If you’ve submitted something, know that we’re working feverishly around the clock trying to parse through all these pages (and make sure that when we put the add tool back up, it’s easier to find duplicate pages before you submit).
Speaking of products, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about the product categories on gdgt. Just to clarify: yes, we will be adding many more product categories very soon. Right now we’re just trying to get a handle on the massive influx of gadgets in the system, but we wanted to give you a sneak peek at just a few of the categories you can expect us to add in the coming days:
-PDAs / handhelds (for everything from Palm Pilots to Nokia N-series)
-Media streamers (Sonos, etc.)
-Set-top boxes (Apple TV, Slingbox, etc.)
-Universal remotes (Harmony, etc.)
Again, thanks for stopping by and being patient while we work through these early growing pains. We’re absolutely dedicated to making gdgt your go-to place for gadgets.
P.S. -Because we’re all working so hard, we probably won’t have a podcast this week. But if you haven’t already watched our totally amazing intro video with Veronica Belmont, do it now, it’s so completely worth your while.
